Ethical AI in Engineering Education: A Case Study on Mindset, Behaviors, and AI Literacy
This chapter presents a pilot case study exploring the ethical, cultural, and pedagogical implications of AI integration in technical education, conducted at the IT department of TGM, a leading secondary vocational school in Vienna. Recognizing that AI in education constitutes not merely a technological shift but a broader socio-cultural transformation, the study applied a mixed-methods diagnostic approach, which was designed to capture complex social and ethical dimensions beyond technical literacy. Seven thematic patterns emerged from the data, informing pedagogical responses to promote ethical awareness and responsible AI use. Rigorous scientific oversight ensured a comprehensive and ethically grounded analysis. Conducted over a defined period in 2025, the project delivers the first comprehensive AI mindset and ethics diagnostic scan in Austrian vocational education and training (VET), offering a scalable framework for ethical AI integration in learning environments.
