SustAInableEducation: Student-Centered and AI-Enhanced Learning About Sustainability
The skills required to be successful in the modern digital age shaped by artificial intelligence (AI) have changed significantly and lastingly over the past decades. These "future skills" include, but are not limited to, personal skills, interpersonal skills, and competencies necessary to responsibly use AI and contribute to sustainable development. This paper presents the results of the project "sustAInableEducation," an interactive web-based platform allowing students to collaboratively experience AI-generated stories on sustainability in a student-centered way. Furthermore, the findings of a usability study with two secondarylevel school classes are depicted. The results show that the platform indeed creates immersive stories about the 17 Sustainable Development Goals tailored to the target group. The usability study revealed that secondary-level students perceived the platform as very positive and useful. We conclude that AI can be used to create student-centered learning environments fostering the acquisition of future skills, contributing to sustainable development.
