Esports Gamers' Satisfaction: A Multi-Theoretical Integration

Esports Gamers' Satisfaction: A Multi-Theoretical Integration

Abstract

This research addresses critical theoretical gaps in esports literature by integrating multiple theoretical frameworks to understand gamer satisfaction and behavioral outcomes. Using the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) framework as a meta-theoretical structure, we systematically combine hedonic consumption theory, relationship marketing, and social exchange theory to examine how playful consumption experiences shape satisfaction and subsequent behaviors among esports gamers. A cross-sectional study collected data from 193 European esports gamers via Amazon Mechanical Turk, analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The integrated model demonstrates both reflective and formative constructs to capture the multidimensional nature of esports engagement. Results reveal that hedonic experiences—specifically enjoyment, arousal, and sensory engagement—are the strongest predictors of gamer satisfaction. Satisfaction significantly mediates relationships between playful stimuli and behavioral outcomes, influencing commitment, trust, and engagement. Unexpectedly, escapism, fantasy, and role projection showed non-significant effects, challenging conventional assumptions about gaming motivations. This research advances theoretical understanding by bridging fragmented perspectives via integrating the theories of SOR with relational marketing and providing a sequential explanation of how experiential inputs translate into satisfaction and behavioral responses (e.g., commitment, engagement, engagement, and trust).. Practically, findings offer actionable insights for game developers, event planners, and marketers seeking to enhance gamers’ satisfaction.
