A novel database management system service called playout management service dedicated to realizing multimedia presentations was proposed recently. In distributed multimedia database management systems without guaranteed performance such a playout management service can face the problem that system performance becomes insufficient when realizing a stored multimedia presentation. This problem can be overcome by extending the playout management service with reactive capabilities such that it balances the data to be fetched from a remote multimedia database to the system performance available. In this paper, we propose the concept of delta-set to deviate the execution of a multimedia presentation in an optimized way. We show a heuristic scheme to identify the most adequate delta-set with respect to (1) the actual system state, (2) user preferences, and (3) the specific properties of multimedia presentations.
